On the Rails for Climate: Top High School Coders Journey Across Canada to Tackle Environmental Challenges

Fifty of the world’s most skilled high school coders and hackers are embarking on a journey across Canada to develop technology-based solutions for environmental challenges.

These talented students are part of Hack Club, a global non-profit network that connects high school coding clubs. They will travel by train from Vancouver to Montreal over four days on Via Rail’s The Canadian.

According to Hack Club founder Zack Latta, the participants will be creating algorithms and analyzing patterns to address environmental issues such as wildfires, pollution, and deforestation, drawing inspiration from the diverse landscapes they pass through.

“While solving climate change in just four days isn’t feasible, we aim to inspire the next generation of technologists to dedicate their careers to this crucial area,” Latta explained.

He hopes that this journey will encourage participants to push their limits and explore new technologies they haven't used before. “Coding is the ultimate form of self-expression—it’s about turning your ideas into something tangible that others can experience,” he added.

One young hacker, who has been coding for over four years, is eager to connect with peers who share her commitment to combating climate change. “I’m really looking forward to bonding with other hackers, especially since we’re finally meeting in person,” she shared with CityNews.

As they traverse Canada’s landscapes and remote wilderness, these young innovators will emphasize the importance of environmental stewardship and highlight the ecological advantages of rail travel.

“You’ll experience the transformation of landscapes, from the stunning Rocky Mountains to the Prairies and finally to the nation’s urban center,” said Michael Acosta, Via Rail’s chief commercial officer.

Acosta expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to support young people in addressing major global issues. “We’d be thrilled to see more of these kinds of initiatives,” he said.
