Scandal Surrounding Pierre Poilievre Over His Remarks! Poilievre Removed from House of Commons After Calling Trudeau a ‘Wacko’
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre was expelled from the House of Commons on Tuesday after referring to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as a “wacko prime minister.”
House Speaker Greg Fergus took the action during question period, citing Poilievre’s language as “unparliamentary.” The incident occurred after Poilievre criticized Trudeau for allowing British Columbia to decriminalize small amounts of hard drugs, a policy that the province is now reconsidering.
Last week, B.C. Premier David Eby requested the federal government amend the Criminal Code exemption for simple drug possession to allow police to intervene in cases of public drug use.
Poilievre, in his remarks, stated, “Even the B.C. NDP is distancing itself from the decriminalization of crack, heroin, meth, and other hard drugs,” and questioned, “When will we end this wacko policy by this wacko prime minister?”
Speaker Fergus asked Poilievre to withdraw his comments. Poilievre initially offered to replace “wacko” with “extremist,” and when asked again, substituted it with “radical.” After multiple refusals to fully retract the statement, Fergus declared Poilievre in contempt of the chair’s authority and removed him from the chamber.
According to the Library of Parliament, there is no record of an opposition leader being named and removed from the House of Commons by the Speaker before this incident.
Earlier, Conservative MP Rachael Thomas was also ejected from the House after refusing to apologize for claiming that Speaker Fergus was acting “disgracefully.” Following Poilievre’s removal, many Conservative MPs left the chamber in protest and took to social media, accusing the Speaker of censorship and repeatedly using the term “wacko.”
Poilievre tweeted, “Today, the Liberal Speaker censored me for describing Trudeau’s hard drug policy as wacko. Six people die every day from overdoses in BC. Kids are playing near used syringes. Nurses fear breastfeeding after inhaling toxic drug fumes. This is a wacko policy from a wacko PM destroying lives.”
In response to Poilievre’s removal, Government House Leader Steve MacKinnon condemned the Conservative leader’s actions, calling them a “disgrace” and an affront to parliamentary institutions. He criticized Poilievre’s rhetoric as “extreme” and pointed to a recent incident where Poilievre was seen at a protest where a flag linked to the extremist group Diagolon was displayed.
During question period, Trudeau accused Diagolon of promoting violence against “2SLGBTQ+ Canadians, Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims, and Jews,” and MacKinnon expressed concern over the normalization of such extreme rhetoric in politics.
MacKinnon also highlighted Poilievre’s recent comments about potentially using the notwithstanding clause to implement bail reform if elected, criticizing this as another example of extreme behavior.
Conservative ethics critic Michael Barrett defended Poilievre, accusing Speaker Fergus of applying a double standard and suggesting that the rules are different for the opposition leader compared to the prime minister. Barrett argued that Poilievre’s use of “wacko” was justified given the context of the B.C. drug policy debate.
In contrast, NDP House Leader Peter Julian condemned Poilievre’s actions, likening him to a “pyromaniac” and stating that his behavior disrespected the parliamentary institutions that Canadians value. Julian also referenced Poilievre’s recent interactions with extremist groups, calling them “profoundly extremist” and “disquieting for all Canadians.”
Julian noted that he had been asked to withdraw comments and apologize in the past, emphasizing the importance of respecting the Speaker’s authority to prevent parliamentary proceedings from descending into chaos. He also acknowledged his own use of the term “wacko” in the House of Commons in 2022 but pointed out that it was not deemed unparliamentary at the time.
